MMBVI CELEBRATES GLOBAL MONEY WEEK WITH ENGAGING STUDENT INITIATIVES

Road Town, British Virgin Islands — MONEY MATTERS BVI (MMBVI), the financial literacy programme at the BVI Financial Services Commission (the Commission), has again endeavoured to lead the Territory’s efforts to observe Global Money Week (GMW) with a series of exciting and engaging educational activities designed to equip youth with essential foundational financial knowledge.

The Global Money Week 2025 (GMW) theme, as announced by organisers - the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (the OECD), is ‘Think Before You Follow, Wise Money Tomorrow’. GMW, which runs from 17 to 23 March 2025, focuses on empowering young people with the knowledge, skills, and behaviours necessary for sound financial decision-making.

A key highlight of MMBVI’s participation in GMW 2025 will be its ‘Young Money – Convert Spending & Grow Your Money’ student workshop, designed to provide an exclusive, interactive learning opportunity for senior secondary-level students. With participation from over 50 students from across the Territory, including the sister islands, this workshop will challenge students to think critically about their spending habits, financial independence, and wealth-building strategies for the future. The event will also feature a Banking Expo with representatives from local banks and a Lunch & Learn event where students will be offered valuable insights into the financial industry.

Further extending its commitment to financial education, MMBVI will continue with school visits and financial literacy lectures to sister island students in Anegada, Virgin Gorda, and Jost Van Dyke.  The aforementioned visits will follow the completion of February and March school rounds in Tortola, where 14 schools and over 400 students benefited from engaging in financial literacy discussions.

Managing Director and CEO of the Commission, Kenneth Baker, expressed his support for the ongoing initiatives, stating, “Financial literacy and financial education are important for shaping strong and informed future financial consumers. The Commission, through MONEY MATTERS BVI, will continue to play its part in helping youth become aware of conflicting behaviours and emotions through the introduction and discussion of foundational concepts like budgeting, saving, investing, debt management, etc., since, our work can help to equip them with the necessary skills to make the best financial choices in the long run”.

In addition to GMW, MMBVI is also helping to observe Education Month 2025 (March), which is spearheaded by the Ministry of Education and Culture. As such, Commission staff participated in the ‘Teach for a Day’ initiative, where they substituted for teachers in the classroom, incorporating fresh insights and real-world connections with students.
