SENIOR INSURANCE REGULATORS APPOINTED

Tortola, British Virgin Islands – 12 June, 2012 – In keeping with its commitment to provide quality service to the financial services industry through the selection of qualified senior regulatory executives, the British Virgin Islands Financial Services Commission (“FSC”) is pleased to announce the appointments of Insurance regulators, Mr. Stanley Dawson and Ms. Trevecca Hodge as Acting Director, Insurance and Acting Deputy Director, Insurance, respectively.  Both appointments took effect on 29 May, 2012.  The appointments of Mr. Dawson and Ms. Hodge follow the departure of former Director, Insurance Harry Whitcher, who demitted office in early May.

Commenting on the appointments, Managing Director/CEO of the FSC, Mr. Robert Mathavious advised, “I am pleased that the Commission was able to promote both these employees from within the Insurance Division.  I congratulate them both on their new appointments and look forward to their  collaboration as they lead the Insurance Division and oversee the regulation of persons conducting insurance business in and from within the Territory”.                              

Stanley Dawson – Director, Insurance

Stanley Dawson has over 26 years of private sector insurance experience and has worked at the Commission since January, 2005.  Regarding his new appointment, Mr. Dawson commented, “I wish to thank the Commission for exhibiting the confidence in me that it has demonstrated by promoting me to this challenging post.  My goal is to continue to work in maintaining a regulatory environment within the insurance sector in the BVI that is compliant with international standards while at the same time striking a balance between those standards and maintaining a well regulated domicile of choice for insurance companies.” 

Dawson previously served as a Senior Regulator within the Insurance Division and more recently as Deputy Director, Insurance from August, 2011 and previously from April, 2006 to September, 2009.  Mr. Dawson holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Accounting from York College of the City University of New York.

Trevecca Hodge - Deputy Director, Insurance

The newly appointed, Deputy Director, Insurance has been employed with the FSC since its inception in 2002 and has over 9 years of regulatory experience, primarily in the FSC’s Insurance Division.  

Trevecca Hodge began her career in regulation at the FSC as a Regulator I and rose through the ranks; having most recently served in the capacity of Senior Regulator from 2010.

On her appointment, Ms. Hodge expressed, “I am most grateful and honoured to be given the opportunity to serve in this capacity having joined the Commission over 10 years ago and worked through the ranks.  I am especially thankful for the opportunity to work closely with members of the Division to share my knowledge along with assisting to move the Division forward.”

Ms. Hodge holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from the University of the Virgin Islands and a Certificate in Captive Insurance Management from the Glasgow Caledonian University in the United Kingdom.  She also holds an Associate in Captive Insurance (ACI) designation from the International Center for Captive Insurance Education and is a member of the Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists (ACAMS).

The Insurance Division of the FSC is responsible for the supervision of insurance business conducted in and within the Territory and includes the oversight of Domestic and Captive Insurers, Insurance Managers, Intermediaries, Agents, Brokers and Loss Adjusters.
